Tracy Attacks Nell Stapleton

Hide and Seek

Tracy’s attack on Nell Stapleton turns a routine attempt to enter the University of Edinburgh Library into an abrupt act of violence. Nell’s effort to intervene gives her a direct encounter with Tracy and leaves her injured, while the incident later supplies John Rebus with a lead linking Tracy to Brian Holmes.

Setting and Immediate Cause

In the library’s quieter summer routine, Nell was sorting request forms when she noticed a commotion at the entrance. The guard had stopped a woman trying to enter without identification. Nell recognized her as the woman in a photograph she had seen in Brian Holmes’s briefcase, and remembered that Tracy had previously gone to the coffee shop but, as far as Nell knew, had not tried to enter the library proper.

The guard was holding Tracy by the arm as she shouted at him. Nell approached and tried to manage the situation, first asking the guard whether there was a problem, then offering to pass a message to someone inside. Tracy insisted on getting into the building, and Nell told her she could not simply barge in. Nell was accustomed to dealing with library users and misjudged the encounter: Tracy’s response was not to accept the explanation or the offer of help, but to break free and strike Nell in the face. Nell fell and lost consciousness. Tracy then pushed past the guard and ran from the library.

Identification and Investigative Aftermath

At the hospital, Nell could not speak easily, so she wrote her account in Rebus’s notebook. She explained that she had tried to calm the woman attempting to enter the library, and identified her as the same woman shown in the nude photograph Brian Holmes had carried in his briefcase the previous evening. Nell also reminded Rebus that he had been at the pub and asked where Brian was, turning the assault into a lead connecting Tracy, Holmes, and the photograph. Rebus recognized the importance of her observation: Tracy’s sudden appearance at the library had left a trail that could be followed.

Unresolved Purpose and Investigative Significance

The assault gave John Rebus a new lead, but not an explanation. Tracy had previously used the library coffee shop, yet Nell had never known her to try to enter the library itself; even after Nell identified her, Rebus could only wonder whether Tracy had acted impulsively or had a specific reason for coming. The question mattered because the incident interrupted his attempt to finish other work before beginning a drugs campaign, turning what might have appeared to be an isolated outburst into another disturbance in an already entangled investigation.

Aftermath

Later, Nell Stapleton helped Tracy find a job at a café and deli near the University of Edinburgh Library. The account does not explain why Tracy had tried to enter the library or suggest that the assault was resolved between them; instead, it places the two women together again in an ordinary social setting. One evening, John Rebus saw Tracy, Brian Holmes, and Nell sharing a joke over their meal. He left without ordering, and the novel lets this quiet glimpse of their lives stand against the violence and uncertainty of the library encounter.
